Justice with Michael Sandel

A fantastic set of lectures

JUSTICE is the first Harvard course to be made freely available online and on public television. Nearly a thousand students pack Harvard’s historic Sanders Theatre to hear Michael Sandel, “perhaps the most prominent college professor in America,” (Washington Post) talk about justice, equality, democracy, and citizenship.

The Reith Lectures – Mark Carney December 2020

A wonderful series of four lectures entitled ‘From Moral to Market Sentiments‘ – delivered by Mark Carney, the ex-Chairman of the Bank of England and the UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance.

The lectures look at how we value ‘things’ using the Credit, Covid and Climate crises as exemplars. Carney’s lectures contend with the most important judgement we make – the judgement as to what is important – the judgement as to what is of value!

1. From Moral To Market Sentiments

2. From Credit Crisis To Resilience

3. From Covid Crisis To Renaissance

4. From Climate Crisis To Real Prosperity

(BBC Radio 4)

The Reith Lectures 2019 Lord Jonathan Sumption

A wonderful set of lectures by Lord Sumption – until recently a justice of the UK’s Supreme Court, as well as being a distinguished historian.

It is an integrated set of talks that asks who judges the judges, who rules the rulers, the ‘problems’ of rules/law, the fragility of democracy and the fundamental importance of political choice.

1. Law’s Expanding Empire

2. In Praise of Politics
3. Human Rights and Wrongs
4. Rights and the Ideal Constitution

5. Shifting the Foundations

(BBC Radio 4)

Covid and Coercion – what gets valued in the making of judgements?

A wonderful interview with Lord Sumption – until recently a justice of the UK’s Supreme Court, as well as being a distinguished historian.
